The Dallas Mavericks were formed in 1979 when businessmen Don Carter and Norm Sonju were awarded the rights to bring an NBA franchise to Dallas. There had not been a professional basketball team in Dallas since 1973 when the Dallas Chaparrals moved to San Antonio and became the San Antonio Spurs. It was at the 1980 All-Star Game when owners voted to allow the new team, and this is where the Dallas Mavericks began. Named after an old TV western, the team name Mavericks beat out the other team name options as fans casted their votes to secure the Mavericks name after much controversy. For much of the 1980's the Mavericks were considered one of the top teams in the NBA making the playoffs 6 out of 7 years from 1983-1990 and won the Midwest Division in 1986-87 and reached the Western Conference Finals in 1988. The 1990's were known as the "dark ages" for the Mavericks as they were crushed by opponents during much of this period. Once Mark Cuban stepped in as the owner in 2000, things quickly changed for the better as the Mavs picked up Dirk Nowitzki, Michael Finley, and Steve Nash helping to elevate the team to a prominent stature. The Mavs held their best regular season in 2006-07, winning 67 games to earn the NBA's best record. Dirk Nowitzki won the MVP that year and despite their best efforts, the Mavs fell short to the 8th seeded Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs. In 2008, coach Rick Carlisle lead the team back to winning form to succeed the rest of the decade.
The 2010-2011 season was a phenomenal success as the Mavericks defeated the Miami Heat 4 games to 2 and won the NBA Championship title bringing the city of Dallas to an uproar. This victory secured the first NBA title in team history of the 31-year old franchise as Dirk Nowitzki was named the MVP of the Finals.
