Good Questions

How many seats does Tei-An's omakase counter have?

Sixteen. There are no published private rooms, so it is a counter restaurant rather than a group one. On a symphony night those seats go early.

What is Tei-An known for?

Soba. Chef Teiichi Sakurai trained at the Tsukiji Soba Culinary Academy in Tokyo and pulls buckwheat in house. The omakase runs through seasonal fish and A5 Miyazaki beef, then finishes on soba.

Has Tei-An won a James Beard award?

Sakurai has been a semifinalist for Best Chef: Southwest, in 2016 and again in 2020, rather than a winner. The restaurant also appears in the Michelin Guide Texas selection.

About This Service

Sixteen Seats, House-Pulled Soba, and a Chef Who Built Half of Japanese Dallas

Tei-An is a soba house in One Arts Plaza with a sixteen-seat omakase counter, opened in 2008 by Teiichi Sakurai. The Michelin Guide has recommended it in its Texas selection, and the soba is always the finale.

The Sakurai Lineage, Which Explains a Lot About Dallas

If Dallas Japanese dining feels unusually deep for an inland city, one chef is a large part of the reason.

Restaurant Opened Where it stands
Teppo 1995 Sold to his head chef in 2001
Tei Tei Robata Bar 1998 Also sold in 2001, still trading on Henderson
Tei-An 2008 The soba house, and his own kitchen

Sakurai trained in soba at the Tsukiji Soba Culinary Academy in Tokyo, which is the detail that separates this from every other Japanese restaurant in the city. Buckwheat is pulled in house, and the omakase often runs through A5 BMS12 Miyazaki beef and ultra-seasonal fish before landing on it.

He has been a James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Southwest, in 2016 and again in 2020.

Booking the counter, and what to know first
  • The omakase counter seats sixteen. There are no private rooms published, so a large group is a different restaurant.
  • The omakase price is not published. We confirm it when we book.
  • One Arts Plaza puts you inside the Arts District, which makes this the strongest pre-performance booking in the city alongside Musume.
  • Reporting in 2025 indicated a change in majority ownership, with Sakurai still running the kitchen. We confirm who is cooking before we send you.

Sixteen seats means the counter goes early on a symphony night. Tell us the date: ask the concierge or request a reservation.
